German composer and pianist Felix Mendelssohnis one of the most popular composers of the early Romantic period. He was a child prodigy who became more famous in Britain than in his home country, and died young at the age of 38. He was also a life-long fine artist who left behind over 300 drawings, paintings and sketches. This painting of Lake Lucerne was executed in 1847 — the year of his death.
Mendelssohn’s music was inspired at times by his own art as well. One of his most famous symphonies — Symphony No. 3 in A Minor — is believed to have been inspired by a painting that the composer created during a trip to Scotland in 1829.
