Pietro Longhi (1702-1785) was a Venetian genera painter who specialized in scenes of daily life and portraiture. He is remembered for his drawings as much as his paintings. His son Alessandro was also an artist of note.

Longhi has left us the most flattering portrait of Domenico Cimarosa in existance. Cimarosa was a prolific Italian opera composer who composed more than eighty operas. He is best remembered for his light opera masterpiece ll Matrimonio Segreto (The Secret Marriage.) The portrait captures him as a young man coming into his own as a composer. Cimarosa was born on this day in 1749.
